26/9/07 - Fleet Town Youth 3 Oxford City Youth 5 - FAYC

Well these notes have proved hard to write after the couple of weeks that we've had and it would be utterly remiss of me not to talk about those events.

As most of you know 4 of our Youth Players were involved in a car accident last Tuesday, the 18th September. Tragically Dan Ayre died the following morning, his 16th birthday, of his injuries. I knew Dan relatively well. He'd been training with the Youth Team for most of the summer and although a quiet lad everyone could see that he loved football. Not short on ability and desire Dan was one for the future and will be missed by everyone.

My thoughts and I'm sure everyone elses are with Gary and his family and all of Dan's friends as they come to terms with their loss.

Dan's funeral is on Monday 1st October at St Mary's Church, Ewshot at 10.30 am.

This will be followed by the commital at Aldershot Crematorium at 12.00.

The village hall in Ewshot will be open from 11 am for all wishing to attend who can't make it to the Crematorium.

When Dan was younger he had a tumour and had to undergo several operations at a specialist craniofacial unit in Oxford. Dan's family have asked for donations to go to 'The Oxford Craniofacial Research Fund' for anyone who wishes to donate. You can donate through either myself or the football club and we will ensure it is forwarded on. We had a collection at the Youth game and there will be another collection at tomorrow's First Team FA Cup game v Mangotsfield United. The first team squad have also pledged a genorous amount.

The other 3 lads, Lee Faulkner, Sam Waters and Derek Renfrew suffered injuries of varying degrees are now on the road to recovery, but will continue to need all of our support.

I would pubically like to thank our scheduled opponents last week, Dale Wade and Phil Dodds at Sandhurst Town, Oxford City, our opponents on Wednesday night, the officials of the Southern Youth League and everyone else involved for their understanding over the last couple of weeks.

So to the game.

It was 'nice' to get back on the pitch.

On 12 mins we took the lead after a swift counter attack saw Gav with the ball in behind the right back. His dangerous ball across was turned in by Sam Hamilton, although some people may claim it was an own goal. 1-0

On 14 mins we found ourselves level 1-1

On 27 mins we were down following a quality volley from just outside the box. 1-2

On 34 mins following one of our corners we were again level. Mike and Dan had a couple of swings at the bobbling ball before Sam Hamilton finished. 2-2

We conceded 2 in the 10 mins after half time. The first followed some in decision at the back and for the second we were caught ball watching and conceded a penalty. 2-4

On 62 mins the comeback looked on, after a beautiful jinking solo run and finish from left back by Liam Roberts.

On 70 mins another bit of slack marking and tracking, saw a parry from Luke P-H fall at an attackers feet. 3-5

We continued to press to get back into the game having 2 cleared off the line, but we just couldn't find a way in. In all honesty I don't think I could have taken another high scoring draw, but I look forward to next season's tie.

All in all it was a good effort by the lads, just some naive defending at one end and good defending at the other end saw to our demise. We have a strong squad which will only get better over the coming week as we look to involve the lads currently playing college football and the return of some players from injury and suspension.

1 Luke Parker-Hodds
2 Ashley Tribe (James Lane)
3 Liam Roberts 1
4 Steve Girdlestone
5 Shawn Foster
6 Bobby Bland
7 Michael Campbell
8 Dan Bone
9 Sam Hamilton 2
10 Gavin Muir
11 Luke Nicholas (Dan Seabrooke)

Sorry to Callum and Josh D.

RIP Dan Ayre.
