Tuesday 30th September 2003 - Day 17/273 - Detroit, Michigan

Woke up (which after last night is a blessing) in the St Regis hotel on Grand Boulevard in Detroit. The St Regis is a lovely hotel which was described as being very central in Detroit. In effect it was very central to itself and walk 2 blocks in any direction and you became very weary of who was about. It turns out that the General Motors World Headquarters used to be next door and this was the hotel that basically serviced it's guests. It's about a 2 mile walk down Woodward to downtown Detroit where the new GM HQ is on Lake Michigan and not alot else.

Staying in a nice hotel again I hear you say. Well in truth there are again no hostels in central Detroit. The nearest one is 10 miles out of town for reasons which are now all too apparent. Anyway at $187 between the 2 of us for 2 nights, it didn't seem bad value.

The first stop today was the Motown Museum on Grand Boulevard. At just $8 for entry you are treated to a museum that is both fascinating and interesting. It's far smaller and more homely, than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and more preferrable. It is actually set in the building where it all started. The guide made it feel all the more personal and it really is an astounding story.

We decided to do the tour of Detroit, but discovered it really did have nothing for us. It's very black, very intimidating and very America. However everyone we've spoken to has been really nice. Mx has already made her mind up that she hates it and there's no changing that. She's going to Chicago a day early on the train. She doesn't want to go near the Greyhound Terminal again. I how ever am determined to make it to the Henry Ford Motor Musem and the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn. It wouldn't seem right leaving Detroit, the Motor City, without getting to the Motor Museum. However getting to Dearborn without a motor is proving very tough.
